The first few chapters of "Little Darlings" by Melanie Golding give the reader a peek into the unflattering, bleak, grotesque side of being a new mother. I can feel the hysteria of the main character, Lauren, building as the gravity of what she's done settles in - she looks around desperately for help but has to accept that she alone is responsible for the infants. I want to read on to find out how her psyche shifts further into desperation and into the belief that her children are not her own. The interweaving elements of fantasy and reality are reminiscent of the thoughts of a sleep-deprived, fearful mind - what was that sound? Can I really trust my own mind?

The cover is attractive and echoes well the depths of hysteria.
