Little Darlings starts with a woman at a river, carrying two babies, surrounded by police. There's a flashback, a detective members an old lady saying that the mother will have to put the babies under water in order to get her babies back. We then shift a month earlier to the birth of Lauren's twin boy. Fortunately, I have had my boys, because the graphic descriptions of Lauren's post-birth body might frighten an expectant mother (accurate though it is!). The author does a nice job of evoking the suddenness of motherhood, even after the long pregnancy, and the fears that come with the responsibility of parenting. Lauren thinks she has a roommate with twins, but is told she doesn't. She dreams of a kitten and a bird whose noises transform into noises like a baby would make. Then the next night she does have a roommate with twins and a very uncomfortable encounter. I have no idea where the story will go. I would think it will continue to evoke universal fears related to motherhood and losing your children along with a dash of fantasy. It was a gripping First Impression.
