In reading the first few chapters of the book, the reader gets to meet Lauren, a new mom of twin boys. She talks about a lot of the not-so-pleasant after-birth affects in detail, so beware. It's hard to say if the rest of the book will be just as graphic, but the beginning certainly was.
The sci-fi aspect comes in at the end of the preview - with a woman (real or imagined?) who shows up, threatening to take her babies and swap them with her cursed ones unless they trade off one right away. Lauren refuses... and thus sets the stage for the rest of the book.
