For those that have experienced abuse but cannot see themselves in books with abuse that is told in striking detail, this book shows the shades of grey of abuse that most women actually experience. Layered on that is a multicultural experience as well as striations of various layer of socioeconomics. I immediately identified with Tatum and understood her complex feelings for Mateo. I wish more novels explored this liminal space for abuse where people are unsure. I could see it clearly from the outside but understand why she couldn’t from the inside. The fact this is a debut author is amazing. I really hope this book spreads as I hope. The sad truth is the Mateo’s of the world will remain unchecked. I do hope that the Tatum’s of the world will see where they matter and where they should speak out. I had a hard time putting this book down. Well done!
