It would have been welcome if the focus had eventually revealed how the relationship between Tatum and gentle Vera had evolved.

Like Tatum, readers can't hate Mateo because the reporter is never allowed to tell us exactly what Mateo was accused of. If it simply involved repeated bad choices, as in Tatum's relationship with him, that's one thing; if he finally actually assaulted a woman, that is another.

And why didn't she leave him after he kicked a bird? Fame trumps decency?

Yes, Mateo strings her along for years and does betray her by stealing her words and her gift in his latest book and yet, had he now offered her closeness to his fame, she would never have stayed with him as such a lousy boyfriend.

All those nights in bed next to a handsome famous dude and No Sex = c'mon!
Why have so little respect for yourself while being so judgmental about all others
except, of course, Mateo...?

Plot filled with shame, denial, fear - until Tatum magically becomes "fascinating" = ?!?
