Alternating between two time periods, this story about a woman looking back on her past relationship with an older, celebrated author was a read in a single afternoon book for me. I thought about getting up to do other things but felt compelled to keep turning pages.

When Tatum is approached by a journalist hoping for an interview about her experiences with an author recently accused of sexual assault she is quick to say that she was never victimized by him in that way. However, as she re-examines their past she realizes that their friendship was far from healthy and far from equal. Deftly written, it was easy to become immersed in this story. The ending fizzled for me, after so much build up and detail, but the rest was so strong that I didn’t mind very much. It is hard to believe this was a first novel. I am greatly looking forward to seeing what the author writes next.
