Life Lessons from Hip-Hop has great shelf appeal. The bright cover and thumbnail portraits of artists who will be familiar to my students will draw many of them to pick this one up. The contributors are fifty of "the most creative, successful and inspiring minds of our generation," writes author Grant Brydon in his Introduction. Because the contents are grouped by theme, readers can jump to a section (or a contributor) that mosts interests them. For example, Chapter 1 "Motivation," Chapter 5 "Mental Wellbeing," and Chapter 10 "Resilience" will be popular, based on past requests for these topics. Reluctant readers will especially love the browsable format and one-page essays featuring some of their favorite hip-hop artists. This collection may not age particularly well, as the artists come in and out of prominence, but as a very of-the-moment collection it is recommended for most libraries serving young adults.
