I’m floored that this is a debut novel and impressed it’s a YA thriller. The plot is tense and sinister while the characters are realistic high school teens. School plays and pep rallies are balanced with controlling dating relationships and life-threatening situations.

All of the characters are three-dimensional, but one shows signs of the kind of person who can ruin your life. As their stories unfold, we learn some are hiding secrets and there’s danger lurking beneath.

There’s a break-up that escalates to stalker-crazy level. It’s almost unreal until you recall the latest news headlines with something similar. There are new romances budding, but one of them’s illegal and doomed.

It’s a fast-paced page-turner with likeable characters. There are moments I wanted to say, “No, don’t do that!” yet it was reasonable why the character thought it was a solid decision.

Underneath the drama, there’s a message: you’re not in a healthy relationship if one person is controlling the other. Get out!
