The Legacies by Jessica Goodman starts out with a great opening chapter–so many suspense-filled teasers right out of the gate. The reader who loves a mystery that challenges her to double-guess the author, is already making assumptions. And it ends with an intriguing cliff hanger. Love it.
The major players are introduced right away, and as the first few chapters progress, each player gets his or her time in the spotlight. Secrets–BIG secrets–surface as the individual stories [told as separate character chapters] unfold.
Four nominees facing a life-altering opportunity, and all with hidden agendas, come together to create a compelling drama of intrigue.
Scene setting and World building are well placed, and cleverly paced, throughout the unfolding story to keep the reader engaged. Secrets and unexpected plot Twists: what could be more enticing to a mystery afficionado?
The characters are ingeniously developed by the author, each one distinctly individual; but it’s difficult to identify which one is the lead. For the reader, it comes down to a choice, I think: Who are you rooting for? Which one will be your ‘hero’?
Show Don’t Tell is alive and healthy in this manuscript; but there is one teensy tiny glitch. On page 14, third paragraph…"even though we were best friends, there were somethings we didn’t need to share”…somethings should obviously be two words.
Judging from the introductory chapters, this story promises a good mystery that makes the reader want to keep on reading to discover how it will all turn out.
