A father and his young son disappear in the wilderness of the Boundary Waters of Minnesota for over 10 years when the son appears alone breaking into a store. The owner, not realizing who the intruder is, fires his gun and accidently kills his wife. The young boy is placed in a mental institution because he won't tell why he and his father disappeared and where they have been. The story builds from this point as both patient and therapist discover the truths about the lies they have lived. They escape from the institution and are attempting to reach the boys father who is extremely ill.
