Mindy Mejia seems to have written a winner, here. I enjoyed the quick pace and the narration of the excerpt. It lead me wanting to know more about speech therapist Maya Stark and the reasons why she entered this line of work. I also want to know why she was suspended from high school! Very intriguing, indeed.
That's just the start of the mystery surrounding this book. Of course we all want to know why Lucas isn't speaking and what happened to his father. We don't get many details about that in the excerpt, but I have a guess. I'm curious also as to why Lucas froze when he heard Maya moan in pain. He didn't have any trouble causing the damage, so why did it bother him after the fact?
I would love to continue reading this novel. It is different and a bit startling. Definitely has promise.
