This main character of the harshness of nature ties in with the sense of hurt that humans bring to each other, whether it's harm through death or abandonment.
This is not a fast paced book. It does contain action, but most of the story is the unwinding of the family histories of Lucas and Maya and the surprising ways that they interconnect.
Although I liked all of the characters, my heart belongs to Jasper the dog.
