An interesting, queer found-family historical murder mystery, this kept me engaged from start to finish. I’m not usually a mystery reader, but throw in queer main characters and I’m there. I liked the mystery ok, but I was really there for the friendships, potential romances, and queer lives. I loved the characters and the overall vibe.
The fact that the main character was a police officer and is now turned private detective after getting fired for his queerness gave him an understandable skill at solving mysteries - no amateur thrown into a mystery, he’s actively seeking them out. I found I liked that here, even though typically in a mystery/thriller I don’t like the more procedural vibes that tend to come with mystery solving experience.
I listened to the audiobook and thought that the narrator did a great job and was easy to listen to.
