I love that this book opens with an as-yet-unnamed narrator and a bar brawl. It hooked me from the first paragraph. Once Pearl enters the scene, it gets even better. Pearl wants to hire our narrator to uncover the mystery of her wife's death. Did I mention this takes place in the 1950s when being gay was an actual crime? This book definitely reads like a noir crime novel, which I love. The house seems to be a character in itself. I can't wait to uncover the mystery of Irene's death alongside Evander and Irene.
