The cover of Laurentian Divide implies nature; lots of green, the hint of a bridge, it's a mystery just like the story inside.

The unfamiliar words of the title - What's Laurentian? Why divide? These questions together, made me want to read more. I find out Laurentian Divide is a place; a remote place in Minnesota with a unique history and equally unique residents. It begins with a mystery, where is Rauri Paar? We are quickly drawn into the world of Hatchet Inlet and the inner-lives of its residents, as they contemplate the whereabouts and condition of Rauri. Sarah Stonich packs evocative descriptions into spare prose as she describes each resident's prediction. Could Hatchet Inlet's last remaining private property owner be bobbing like a cork around the Laurentian Basin? or simply laid up with a manageable injury? Through questions like these we quickly come to know the residents of Hatchet Inlet. Sissy, waitress, bride-to-be, and SissyBrittle maker at Pavolas; will her wedding still take place this weekend? Will Pete Lahti (son of the man Sissy will marry and the Vet who last saw Rauri when he had to put his old spaniel down) be the one to make the long trek to Rauri's island to check on him? I want to know the answers to all these questions, so I'd like to read beyond the great first look!
