If you spend time consuming true crime, one thing you have probably noticed in recent years is a heavier emphasis on talking about who the victims of the crime were. These people whose lives were cut short are worthy of our recognition and remembrance, but often true crime has sensationalized their killers without giving focus to the victims. Last Call does an excellent job telling readers who the (known) victims of this killer were, what their lives were like and where they came from, what they experienced. It also excellently contextualizes the time in which this serial killer operated, and what the societal climate was like as this killer preyed exclusively on gay men. It's a frustrating story at times because it seemed like these cases weren't focused on enough by police in order to catch the killer sooner, though hindsight and knowing that all the clues readers can see weren't necessarily available to investigators. Excellent and memorable reporting by Elon Green.
