I...did not love this book. I’m a huge true crime podcast fan and I’d hoped that it would translate to reading. Spoiler alert: it didn’t. At least, not with this book.

If I had to choose a genre, this book, which tells a wandering rambling narrative of a serial killer in queer 90’s NYC, is more of a historical nonfiction. Not really true crime, not quite history, not anything else.

I think this story is such an important one to be told and has the opportunity to be so powerful, but it suffered from the lack of a compelling narrative arc. The information, while interesting song valuable, lacked a consistent thread.

There’s some really great information in here about the history of queer New York City, the victims of the serial killer, and the backdrop of the concurrent AIDS epidemic, but it gets lost within itself. There is so much potential here and I’m glad the author did the research and brought it to light, but I hope this is only the beginning of the conversation.
