True Crime that's inconsistent but not cliché

I generally stray away from True Crime genre books because they just sound so cliché and overly melodramatic. Thankfully Last Call manages to avoid this in the preview, which is fantastic, because it covers a crime most people don't want to pay attention to. Unfortunately it does have a tendency to jump indiscriminately between providing background information about a victim to the time of his disappearance making it harder to follow. I hope for the sake of the book this doesn't present through the whole entire book, because otherwise the story is fascinating.
