Land of Big Numbers by Te-Ping Chen is a unique and stunning collection of short stories. I didn't realize in my "first look" that is was actually a collection of short stories so I was a little confused when I started reading the actual book, but was pleasantly surprised. Each story is set in contemporary China and there are several social issues and commentary addressed in each story. Several perspectives and family dynamics are explored throughout the book.

I feel like each story is just long enough to get the right amount of social insight surrounding the subject it's meant to address. In each story, Te-Ping Chen is somehow able to brilliantly develop each character so deeply in such a short amount of time. The subjects very and can get a bit dark, but they are all beautifully written and make an impact. Overall, a very enjoyable collection to read.
