Exacting what I was in the mood to read today! This YA fantasy gothic tale features a fascinating and complex heroine (she’s also demisexual / on the asexuality spectrum, which I don’t get to see enough of in fiction!), a brooding bisexual love interest, and a mysterious lord of death. There are elements of Beauty and the Beast as well as the class Hades/Persephone myth that I found fun to tease out in the text while reading. While I would recommend some reader’s check the author’s website for content warnings, I overall found this to be an enchanting read that was absorbing and entertaining to escape into. There are some dark themes, but I feel as though the book cover conveys that, even to a younger audience. My only source of disappointment is that there’s a cliffhanger and the second book isn’t immediately available. I need to know what happens next!
