All Violeta Graceling wants to do is to protect her brother Arien, who has dreams that makes shadows come alive. After a harrowing day in the village when the shadows show up during the day, Lord Rowan Sylvanan demands that they come back to his estate at Lakesedge. Leta has heard the rumors about the lord, who drowned his entire family in the lake as a boy. However, when Leta arrives, she realizes that the Rowan is not as bad as the rumors make him out to be. Can Leta protect her brother?

I really liked that fact that most of the characters are LGBTQ. Clipstone writes of a new gothic world full of magic and alchemy, and filled with the love of a sister who would do anything for her brother. I did find Leta to be a bit extreme at first, but as the story goes on, I realized why she acted this way. The cover really drew me to this book, and I enjoyed it.

I recommend this for people who would like a light gothic fantasy. There is also a touch of romance as well.
