I don't usually read much Fantasy, but now I am thinking Gothic Fantasy might be my jam. The cover of this one drew me right in right away and when I read the first look I was instantly hooked. I am not sure how the author does it, but she has the ability to place you in the environment and make you feel a part of the story. Violetta was a tad overprotective of her brother which was a little annoying at times but other than that I really enjoyed her character and how she would do absolutely anything to protect the people she cares about and loves. I loved her and Rowan together. The main premise about the corruption was intriguing and easily kept me interested. I enjoyed that the magic elements were not overly complicated. It's difficult for me to stick with a book if it gets too hung up on the details and making everything very intricate. I don't have to know or understand every detail of the magic in order to enjoy it. The ending was a little disappointing, but I really hope everything works out in the next book.
