The summary was better than all I read. I don't know anything about this author but this is written poorly. The characters are just people in a book with emotional problems. The actual story was some what interesting but the way events unfolded it was a blur and waste of time.

Leta tries very hard to protect and save her brother from the shadows and nightmares that consume him. Being orphans they have no where to go so they both suck it up and make do. One day Rowan shows up threatening that if Leta doesn't let her brother go with him there will be problems. He claims to be able to heal him. Randomly he says he saw his powers in the woods when the first 100 pages of the book Leta keeps them hidden. It didn't make a lot of sense.

Back at Rowans lake estate it is quickly understood that to "cure" Arien of the shadows he must sacrifice some of himself and visit the lakes edge where Roman's family died. From here events unfold too fast and in disarray. Leta has feelings for Rowan but 1 paragraph earlier she hates him. Whatever type of romance they got going on was pointless. It felt like the author ran out of ideas so she made something up on the fly.

The ending is yes a cliffhanger for book 2, which I won't be reading, although everything wraps up its dumb. Leta goes to the world below to meet face to face with Lord Under who is responsible for the shadows and corruption plaguing her brother. I can't say much more it was boring and I wanted to DNF but I pressed on.

I think a trigger warning needs to be included. There is a significant amount of what I will refer to as self harm. Although it is portrayed very differently, the descriptions and what happens at the end well I think it can be triggering for some. I would have likely bot read to the end had I known.
