I love a good, dark fantasy. One with the gothic, gritty clouds hanging over the setting and the characters, and that is just what I got with this one. Lakesedge was a quick and easy read, but one that pulled you in from the beginning as you try to figure out exactly what is going on.

The writing style and imagery is what truly establishes the atmospheric tone for the book as Violeta begins her new life at Lakesedge with the mysterious Rowan Sylvanan, who has his own dark secrets.and needs Leta’s brother to help break the curse.

The pacing is effective in progressing the storyline and the magical aspect in the form of alchemy is just one more way the gothic undertones are created. The characters successfully develop their motives and needs while not losing sight that, at the end of the day, Leta is still just a teenager who is worried about her brother. This is book one of two, so i’m hoping that characters, especially some of the secondary ones will be fleshed out a little more.

Each moment led to the next and intrigued me as I learned more. The romance, while predictable, works and is fitting. It is a perfect example of a found family, and I can’t wait for the sequel.

On a bonus note, the book is absolutely gorgeous - inside and out! If you like YA fantasy, I would definitely recommend this one.
