Violeta is a protective older sister, just trying to keep Arien safe from the shadows that call to him and overpower him at night. "Mother" is not a mother figure at all - unless you're imagining an evil stepmother! In the first two chapters you already feel Violeta and Arien's bond, along with the terror they feel in the presence of shadows and the shadow monster that morphs into a young man toward the end of chapter 2.
