I am a huge fan of the Courtney series by Wilbur Smith. I had not read any of the Ballentine series. I will have to go back and get the other installments before this one.
Yet this one felt plodding and hard to get into. It took about 10 tries for me to really get into the book. Then around page 100, I could NOT put the book down.
I felt that the writing was good, the scenes ok, the characters were a bit wooden.
I really liked that the characters had human flaws, drug addictions, sorrow, needing a good friend, etc.
The other thing that was lagging, and I am not sure if this will be addressed in another book, there was character threads that were NOT neatly tied up by the end of the book.
