Immediately, the characters are depicted as vain and vapid. The summary alone should have insinuated as much, but it was confirmed within the first page. Amber has something of an interesting past, but any intrigue is quashed by Penrod's disdain and stereotypical character: the career military man who balks at taking orders and has a bit of a temper. Definitely not the book for me.
