When I first started reading the excerpt, I was a bit taken aback by the modernity of the language and the events. The way that Amber (abet modern name) was discussing her shoes, it seemed like something out of a novel set in 2019. I actually had to go and read the synopsis again to make sure that it was a historical novel.
