Not Connecting Despite the World and Characters

I really want to like this story since it is a young adult historical mystery (1930s) with Asian main characters something you rarely see. Immediately, there is a conversation of classicism, racism and possibly more which I like.
I like the background: background of characters, setting, possible themes, and such but am not into the story. I feel disconnected from it.
