The first thing that hit me was the distinct voices for Gemma and May. It was clear without the chapter headings which chapter was from which POV based solely on voice. Additionally, it is obvious that Lee took the time to research the time period in which the story is set. The mystery of what happened to Lulu is presented in a way that feels personal, drawing me in and making feel fully invested in finding out what happens next.
Fans of historical fiction and murder mysteries will likely find something to enjoy in this story. As someone who majored in Asian American Studies in college, I absolutely cannot wait to dive into this story and find little bits and pieces about the time period and the feelings of the time. I also hope that others will read this and realize that the way that the Chinese are treated in this story and this time period is, unfortunately, only barely different from how it is in some places today.
