I had absolutely no expectations before starting this book, but even if I did I feel like they would have been surpassed. Gabby Rivera's Juliet Takes a Breath is an incredible novel that takes a hard look at feminism, sexuality, white privilege, and figuring yourself out. As an individual with Puerto Rican heritage who can pass as white, I'm always looking for more books with Hispanic main characters. Juliet truly goes through a summer of transformation in this novel, even if her trip to Portland isn't quite what she expected it to be. The lessons on learning about your culture and yourself through literature and people who have passed down stories was heartwarming. I would have liked to explore a few characters more, and I think a few plot points were left a bit underdeveloped, but overall I feel like this book is such an important read, and young adult readers who are interested Should definitely pick it up.
