I really like Juliet's appoach towards the world! Right from the start she is out there. I immediately laughed out loud about her flashing a feministic book about pussies in the face of sour old men preaching to her. Way to go girl! I also like how she portrays her mother as a feminist. Yes, she still irons dad's socks, but she is the one ruling the family. That is exactly how women in my mother's family are: let the men think they are the boss, but meanwhile they influence it all.

The style of writing is very direct, in a way that gives a bit of humor to a possibly very heavy and difficult theme. And then there is the likability of Juliet. She is written in such a way that even as a white, Dutch, grown-up woman I somehow recognize something in her.
