This is the first of Lynda LaPlante's Jack Warr novels that I've read. There were a few times when I wished I'd read the previous one, but for the most part, it wasn't a problem with understanding the character or the present story. Enough background was provided to clarify his relationships with other regular characters. The bad guys are pretty one dimensional, but Jack, Maggie, Penny, and Ridley, among others, are nicely developed.

The pacing was fast. It's been a while when I kept reading longer than I should just to find out what was happening next. The story is nicely tied up at the end. There are threads that can carry on into the next book, perhaps Princess, but I was satisfied with the way the story ended, for now.

Descriptions are good. I haven't been to England, but I could sense when I was in the Cotswolds vs. London.

If you enjoy a thriller, this is a good one.
