Luis Navarro and his familia have lived in Key West for forever. A family of firefighters, they all have their own way of keeping their guard up and their feelings hidden away. Something happened to Luis 6 years ago, something that he hasn't gotten over and is still keeping him for opening himself back up. But all that is about to change when he meets Sara Vance.

Sara Vance is a social media influencer who is spending the week in the Keys on the first family vacation she's ever had. Her parents and older siblings are all high powered doctors, and she's spent her life living in their shadow. She feels the need to prove herself to all of them, especially her mother, and this has caused its share of issues. Mainly an eating disorder that she finally has under control. This vacation is supposed to be healing for all of them, especially her mother who was recently announced to be in remission from cancer. But Sara's boyfriend, Ric, who was supposed to be with her, ends up bailing last minute.

It's at this moment when she just happens to run into Luis who just happens to ask if she needs help. She's so desperate she asks him to pretend to be her boyfriend, and he's so desperate for a distraction he agrees. They concoct a scheme that's almost certain to fail, but maybe something incredible will come from it. Maybe what these two broken people need is each other pointing the other in the direction of healing?

Island Affair by Pricilla Oliveras is the start of a brand new series. Similar to the hit TV show This Is Us, it feeds off the drama, and love, of family. While the writing was a little corny in spots, (there might have been one too many "she let out a breath she didn't know she holding in" for me), the story had a lot of heart.

It's told in dual perspectives between the two main characters, which is something I adore. You get to see what Luis and Sara are thinking, and how they are dealing with what's going on between them and their respective families. The knowledge of what happened in Luis's past that caused a rift between him and his brother is revealed a little bit at a time but isn't drawn out. And Sara working things out with her family is taken one step at a time.

It's a heartwarming story, set in a place that I can easily imagine based on the written description. It's the perfect book to take me somewhere else when I am stuck at home, and the perfect story when you need something fuzzy and warm. I would certainly recommend it to anyone looking for a nice romance, especially one with that wonderful fake dating trope.
