Island Affair is a fun, breezy romance set in the lush landscape of Key West. Luis Navarro, resident firefighter, receives mandated time off after a call reminding him of his past impacts him in a profound way. None too happy about his Captain’s decision, Luis agrees to step in as the “fake boyfriend” for social media influencer, Sara Vance. After struggling with an eating disorder and overall feelings of inadequacy, Sara is relieved when she doesn’t have to show up to her family vacation alone. The book follows them throughout the week as they strive to ensure that their faux-relationship isn’t exposed.

I was truly moved by the way Oliveras incorporated mental health and the ongoing struggle one faces after the initial battle is over. I feel far too often people assume that you're "cured", rather than living with a lifelong fight. It was truly a profound moment when Sara found herself and realized that she was enough. There were also many beautiful moments of forgiveness, adding depth to the novel. I loved the lush descriptions of the scenery and the food, and I was thankful that I was able to immerse myself in it all while in Ft. Myers. I had never tried a Cuban sandwich before, and made sure to grab one during my stay. While the first half of this book dragged a bit for me, I highly recommend it if you’re looking for light read that makes you ponder your relationships with those you love and yourself.
