Thank you Bookishfirst for the advanced copy of In the Night of Memory by Linda LaGarde Grover in return for my honest review.

This novel will break your heart a million times over, and it was hard for me to take at times. The writing is beautiful. Poetic. It is so well written that the words shatter you. I know that there will be a following for this book, but unfortunately I am not one of them. This book was just too depressing for me. Two young Native American sisters are given to the County, by their alcoholic mother. If that isn’t tragic enough, the mother tells her daughters that they are going for a ride. The youngest daughter narrates. She doesn’t know what’s happening, and yet she does, and that makes it worse. They become part of the foster care system and later are returned to the reservation. 3 1/2 stars.
