While the geneaology of the story is sometimes hard to follow, the heartbreaking story of Rain and Azure, two Native American girls, is one I will always remember. Removed from their mother and placed into foster care brings both highs and lows until the girls are finally placed with family members. The sadness doesn't end with placement with relatives, but the spirit of survival remains throughout the story. This book opened my eyes to the plight of so many Native American women and the hard path that they are forced to walk.
The author does a remarkable job of painting not only the landscape of the story but of the hearts and minds of both girls. It is sad to think that the path of Azure and Rain is more common then any of us wish to admit!
