The name dropping immediately turned me off

I was turned off by the very first paragraph of this book when the author mentioned Elizabeth Congdon. As she correctly states, Elizabeth Congdon has no relation at all to her character’s story, and it appears she just wanted to name drop something dramatic about Duluth, MN/St. Louis County to grab the reader’s attention.

I know one of Elizabeth’s grandchildren and find it incredibly tacky that anyone would intentionally name drop a horrific, real-life murder in hopes of creating some sort of (grasping) connection to her fictional story of a completely unrelated subject-matter. It comes across as a cheap gimmick, and it makes it hard for me to be interested in reading any more of the story. This is one I will be skipping, which is too bad because there are so few books about Native Americans, especially Native Americans in Minnesota.
