The excerpt of In the Night of Memory leads me to believe that this is a heartbreaking novel. A mother gives up her 2 young daughters to social services. There is a tension to the story, an uneasiness that lingers throughout the pages. Clearly, the two young sisters love one another; they are protective of each other. They love their mother too, but their mother is struggling. She is drinking excessively. The girls are told they are going for a car ride. They know what is happening, but they don’t know. The reader is aware of what is in store for these young girls once they enter the foster care system. One can only hope that there will be joy for them along the way as well. Hopefully, they will be kept together, and they will help each other survive.
