In the garden behind the moon is a gorgeous story about personal struggles and our history. We read bout the stories of many people through the generations of the Chan family. It's told from Mee Ran's perspective, which really elevated the tales of the Chan family's background and individual interests. While the heart-felt writing tells a personal and relatable story of grief, family history, and love.

The story has an emotional, spiritual effect on those who read it and speaks of magical tale of a journey from China to America. The narrative easily blends significant historical events with the intimate journey of a daughter struggling with loss, using a lyrical prose that brings the story out from just a memoir to an earnest exploration of human perseverance. This book included poems, pictures, and info about history. The story was written in a way that allows readers to easily understand what was going on, whether they knew much about the topic or not.

I highly recommend this to people who like memoirs, non-fiction, or true tales that seem slightly magical.
