In the Garden Behind the Moon is a beautifully written story of grief, healing, and self-discovery. Alexandra Chan is able to show how we have to look to the past to heal in the present. The story tells of the death of her father, her last parent, during Year of the Ram. She is an archaeologist and a tiger daughter so this throws her into something she is unfamiliar with. Her grief forces her to look back at her family's past and there she finds some artifacts and stories of their lives. The story goes back to prerevolution China to the Pacific theater of WWII, and even the South under Jim Crow. I loved the cultural mythology and found the story an inspiration. My favorite part was the artwork. It is stunning and I do not think I have seen anything quite like it in the pages of a book in a very long time. The author knows how to tell a story and I am so glad she shared it. I can't wait to see what she writes next.
