Unsettling, ultimately disappointing

I'm pretty much always up for a lesbian coming-of-age story, especially in adult fiction because YA, from my experience, has gotten a bit samey. So I was here for the beginning of this book and the way things started to develop.

It becomes much more than a funny late-blooming lesbian story, and since I didn't read the full summary (which makes it very obvious what Sam is going to be like) it went in an unsettling direction that I didn't expect. Which I can also work with. I've read and liked books about awful characters and awful relationships before, but I dunno, this book seems to revel and get off on all of the awfulness that's happening, and I'm really not into that. Another description from the publisher that I missed calls it "Bridget Jones meets Fifty Shades of Grey meets The L Word" and if I'd seen that before getting into this one, I probably would've passed.
