To me this was a book centered around grief. I'm trying to read more Middle Grade books, so it was fantastic to win a finished copy of this from BookishFirst. The story centers around Nnamdi and what happens after his father (The Chief of Police in Kalaria) is murdered. Nnamdi is given an Ikenga which transforms him into The Man. Nnamdi is overcome with anger and wants to avenge his father's death. He has to learn to let go of his anger, which I think is an important message for younger readers, especially those who are dealing with the death of a loved one. I wasn't a big fan of the book at the beginning, but once the plot line picked up so did my interest. I did enjoy Nnamdi's growth as a character and you come to an understanding that he is young as still has a lot left to learn.
