I rate this a two and a half stars. I was excited for this book because it provided a different point of view and setting that I don't get to read much and it contained a mythic being that reminded me of a golem. After reading the summary, I was intrigued by the plot and what a young boy would do with so much power.

I struggled at the beginning of this novel. It moves at a pretty slow pace and I lost interest a few times and it took about halfway through the novel to pull me back in. Also, the narrating struggled to pull my attention as it did a lot more telling than showing; I wish I had more visualized images of the characters and setting in my head. But, I do see young readers enjoying this story and enjoying the young boy turning into a hero to get revenge for his father. There is a mighty lesson of good vs. evil and what power really looks like. The ending wrapped up satisfyingly but didn't answer all the questions I had about the plot.
