Ikenga is a middle grade book about a boy who gets granted the power to change the world he lives in - and must discover how to control not just this power, but also himself. As with everything Okofaror writes, this one is incredibly well done. I am always amazed at authors who can write well for all ages - and she is definitely one of them.
My favorite thing about this book is that the writing, and the plot development, is really honest while still remaining appropriate for the age group. It is easy to find middle grade books that gloss over topics such as violence, unstable communities, and loss of a parent, but Nnedi Okofaror manages to cover all of these honestly while respecting the age group and reading level that the book is meant for. It is refreshing to see diversity of not just people but also setting and community in this book! I loved it.
