For middle-grade readership, this is surprisingly intense. I love that it doesn't seem to pull punches or sugarcoat real life! Lately, I've been seeing so many books centered around a young female protagonist -- this is centered around a little boy which already breaks the pattern. An interesting prospect for sure!
