Doesn't feel like a middle grade book

I was interested in reading the beginning of this book because I love superheroes, so a young Nigerian superhero sounded like an interesting premise for this book. One of the first things I started to realize as I read the book, though was that it does not feel as though Nnamdi is a twelve year-old boy, he seems to be fifteen or sixteen. This wouldn't be a problem if he was older and the book was being marketed to an older demographic, but it's pretty clear before even reading the book that it is marketed as middle-grade. I honestly feel ambivalent about continuing because the first look was not that intriguing. The cover design is very good, and appropriate for the book. Maybe I wasn't able to read enough to really get interested and feel as though Nnamdi is twelve, and I would have to read more to really decide.
