"If You Could See The Sun" is Ann Liang's debut novel. I found the story to be well written, easy to follow and an overall good read.
Alice Sun comes from an economically challenged family in the outskirts of Beijing, China. She is an extremely bright student that obtains the only partial scholarship to Airington. Airington is an elite international boarding school located in Beijing. She is surrounded by students that take their extreme wealth and social status for granted. Just as she is finding her place at Airington, her mother and father inform her that they can no longer afford the partial tuition. She has until the summer, before she will need to transfer to another school. Her options are the local public school, or move to the Maine where she will live with family friends and attend the local public school. She isn't excited about either option. Besides the issue of switching schools, she suddenly finds herself with a strange, new, uncontrollable power. Alice is able to physically turn invisible. She soon realizes that this strange, new power may work to her benefit. She reaches out to her arch nemesis (or so she thinks), Henry Li to assist her in creating a website to offer her invisibility services to find out what her classmates want to know - for a price. The novel is full of twists and turns as Alice and Henry delve into their new adventure together.
I only have one negative comment. As a teacher, I am always instilling in my students to use proper grammar and vocabulary. Following these rules, will make others aware of their intelligence. This novel would have been just as good without the repeated profanity, especially since the genre is YA.
