A Unique Magical Realism Take on Academia

A scholarship student at an international boarding school develops a sudden ability to turn invisible, and with the help of her academic rival uses her new power to perform tasks for her classmates to pay for her tuition. This story has the perfect blend of action and character development. The protagonist Alice is relatable and has a dynamic and unique voice. The chemistry between Alice and her love interest Henry was fantastic. Liang’s writing strikes a balance between lighter elements like romance and friendships and deeper themes of elitism and academic pressures. I love how diverse young adult fiction is becoming and am looking forward to reading more #OwnVoices stories, especially from Ann Liang.
