“If You Could See The Sun” by Alice Liang. Genre: Ya SciFi/ Magical Realism. Location: Beijing, China. Time: Present.

Wow- what a great first look at this book!

Here’s a tiny synopsis: Alice attends an elite Beijing boarding school. She competes with her nemesis Henry for top school honors every year. Now Alice’s parents have run out of money to keep her there. While she tries to figure out a new course, she starts turning invisible-yes invisible!

You can see why I’m in love with the book so far. The cover is beautiful, the plot is very intriguing, the writing is crisp and contained, with just the right amount of background description. You learn about Alice’s character through her first person narrative. You can tell she has strengths, even though she naturally worries about school issues.

I’m not sure if I’d call this YA book SciFi or Magical Realism- I need to read the whole book to get that straight. But I can tell it’s everything I like- a young, spunky lead character, immersion in an interesting culture and subculture (boarding school), And she turns invisible! 🌵📚💁🏼‍♀️
